Albert Park Pavilion

Client Modular by SHAPE
Location Albert Park, VIC
Solution The Helical Pile
Scale 134 piles
Timeframe January 2026, 2 weeks total

The Stake

Shape needed foundations installed for modular pavilion buildings on a site inside the Albert Park Grand Prix precinct, on a schedule dictated entirely by the event calendar rather than the build program. The risk sitting behind the job was straightforward but unforgiving: a non-conforming pile. The ground beneath the Albert Park precinct holds water, which requires piles to be driven to great depths to perform as required.

The Challenge

The site profile was saturated to a depth of more than 6 metres, pushing final pile depths out to around 9 metres before FTA hit anything reliable to found on. Layered on top of that was the timing: FTA had to leave the site entirely partway through to allow the precinct to be prepared for the Grand Prix itself, then return afterwards to finish the remaining piles, splitting a single job into two on-site windows either side of the event. Given the soil profile, a concrete alternative was never on the table; the project was engineered as a screw pile solution from the outset, with no fallback if the piles didn’t perform in that ground.

The Approach

FTA took full control of the geotechnical side of the project. A six-person crew installed all 134 piles to the required 9-metre depths across the two site visits, working to a sequence built around the Grand Prix set-up and pack-down. Occupational health and safety ran to a heightened standard throughout, layering the Grand Prix’s own OH&S requirements on top of normal construction site requirements, with the crew operating under both simultaneously for the full two weeks.

The Outcome

FTA delivered all 134 piles to depth across both windows, meeting a deadline shaped as much by a Formula 1 calendar as by the build program itself. Shape’s feedback was straightforward: they were incredibly impressed that the deadline was met at all, on the ground and under time pressure that left no room for error.
